Organization = relaxation
Right now, I’m sitting at my computer breathing more slowly and purposefully than I have in a while. I set my alarm a little earlier than usual this morning, and began crossing things off my to-do list as my day went on. This allowed for a kind of focus that I haven’t felt in a while. Throughout the past couple weeks, my brain has been all over the place and filled with existential questions like “What am I going to do with my life?” and, “Why am I always running out of socks?”
You understand.
When I begin to spend too much time wondering about things outside of my control like the location of my socks and whether or not my latest freelance pitch will get accepted, I find it’s best to return to routine, sameness, lists, and my agenda. Being better organized helps me to breathe freely. Actually doing the things I write down in my agenda instead of closing my agenda and pretending that it doesn’t exist (ostrich style) does wonders for my mental health. It seems kind of obvious, though is not always so in real life.
Have you ever struggled with the little voice in the back of your head that’s telling you your day would be much better if you clocked a couple more hours of Broad City? I think it’s difficult to find a balance between listening to that voice for self-care, and listening to that voice when you’ve already binged watched six Friends episodes.
That balance will also change as time goes on. Maybe the voice is there for a reason. Maybe it’s there to allow you to disconnect (partly) and relax. Or maybe it’s there to tease you, taunt you, and break your focus. Practicing basic mindfulness has helped me understand why the voice is there, and address it appropriately. This is the curse of working from home!
Though it may be difficult to maintain some semblance of an organized life, especially if you’re the creative/starving artist type who needs to work multiple jobs to pursue their passions, the consequences are life changing. For me, organization = relaxation = less stress = less acne. Image may be NSFW.

The Best Brownies Ever
I titled these the best brownies ever because that’s what I was determined to create. If you like very fudgy brownies with a crackly top, these brownies are for you. I followed the method from the King Arthur Flour recipe, but used ingredients from the Taste of Home recipe. Miraculously, it worked! To get that awesome fudgy texture where your teeth slowly sinks into to chocolate heaven, its very important to let the brownies sit for a while after baking. I often let mine sit overnight just to be safe, but an hour or two should be okay. Enjoy Image may be NSFW.

- 150 g (5.3 oz) butter
- 1⅓ cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup cocoa
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup chocolate chips
- In a microwave-safe bowl, add the butter and sugar and microwave until melted, about 90 seconds.
- In a large mixing bowl, add the egg, vanilla, cocoa, and salt and whisk to combine.
- Take the butter and sugar out of the microwave and whisk to combine. Place it back in the microwave and heat for about 60 seconds or until bubbly. Add this to the egg mixture and whisk to combine. Add the flour and whisk to combine.
- Place the batter in the fridge to cool before adding the chocolate chips (about 10 minutes). Once cooled, fold in the chocolate chips.
- Preheat the oven to 350 F and line an 8x8 pan with parchment paper. Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre reveals moist crumbs. Let the brownies sit for at least an hour to adopt a fudgy texture. Serve.
